Reading history

Skip the books you've already read — or already own.

Your box is always a surprise — but share your reading history and we'll make sure it never repeats a book you've read, and quietly leans toward the ones you already want. Export a file from your book tracker, upload it once, and you're set. Takes about two minutes.

All four trackers have a place to mark which books you own. If you keep that up to date — read or unread — we use it, and skip those. It matters most for the unread ones: a book you own but haven't got to yet sits on your want-to-read shelf, and since we lean toward that shelf, those are exactly the books we'd otherwise be most likely to send you. If you don't track ownership, no harm — we just go on what you've read.

🔒We only use your list to match against our own shelves — to know what not to send you. We never post it, sell it, or share it, and you can delete it anytime.

On a computer Easiest

  1. Go to goodreads.com and sign in.
  2. Click My Books in the top menu.
  3. In the left sidebar, scroll to Tools and click Import and export.
  4. Click the Export Library button.
  5. Wait a few seconds — a dated download link appears just below the button. Click it to save goodreads_library_export.csv.
  6. Come back here and upload that file. Done!

On your phone

!The Goodreads app can't export — there's no button for it. You have to use a web browser in desktop mode. It's still quick:
  1. Open Safari (iPhone) or Chrome (Android) — not the Goodreads app — go to goodreads.com and sign in.
  2. Turn on desktop view:
iPhone / Safari: tap AA in the address bar → Request Desktop Website.
Android / Chrome: tap (top right) → check Desktop site.
  3. Now do the same path: My Books → Import and export → Export Library.
  4. Tap the download link. The file saves to Files (iPhone) or Downloads (Android) — upload it here from there.

Good to know

Goodreads exports an Owned Copies count, and we read it — for anything you've marked as owned, read or unread. Any count above zero is treated as already on your shelf, so we won't send it. Goodreads only fills this in if you use its Owned Books feature; if you don't, the count comes through as zero and we simply go on your shelves instead.

Your read shelf is what we'll never send you. to-read quietly nudges us toward books you already want, and currently-reading counts as a book in hand, so we skip those too.

Use a different tracker? Goodreads, The StoryGraph, Pagebound and Bookshelf are the four we support today — LibraryThing and Hardcover exports aren't supported yet, but email us the file at info@aspenbookco.com and we'll add it by hand. More trackers coming soon.
